The Bug feat. Miss Red and Flowdan Hearn Generating Station, Toronto ON, June 10
Published Jun 11, 2016While grime producer Kevin "The Bug" Martin may not have been super familiar to the late-night Unsound attendees, he started his set by playing someone who was: Death Grips, with whom the producer collaborated in 2014 on "Fuck a Bitch." After he swiftly and effectively ingratiated himself to the audience, who thrashed along to the wobbly bass beats, the Bug introduced MCs Flowdan and Miss Red, who traded off MC duties as the producer held down the instrumental fort.
Quick-spittin' rapper Flowdan provided boundless energy as he took to the stage to deliver his grimiest rhymes. Flowdan peaked early with the one-two punch of "People Power" and "Horror Show Style," but his visceral delivery kept the party going. Showcasing the versatility of Martin's beats, Israeli dancehall singer Miss Red brought a ferocious playfulness that recalled Die Antwoord's Yolandi Visser. Both MCs traded off as the Bug showcased a mix of grime and dub, with plenty of bubbling, bass-heavy beats to add a melodic spark to a night that had been dominated by industrial dissonance. As Flowdan declared, "these are the evilest hours," and the grime trio ensured that they stretched past 3 a.m. — the engaged crowd didn't seem to mind.
