Ryan Reynolds Will Play Detective Pikachu in Live-Action Pokémon Movie
Published Dec 07, 2017Having mastered the art of the superhero as Deadpool (not to mention the art of Bob Ross), Canadian screen star Ryan Reynolds has set his sights on bringing the Pokémon franchise to life.
As The Hollywood Reporter announced, Reynolds will play the titular role in an upcoming live-action film called Detective Pikachu. Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) are also slated to star in the movie.
The project is being helmed by director Rob Letterman, and it is expected to begin filming in London in January.
THR reports that Reynolds character is "a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things," which should come in handy after Smith's character's father gets kidnapped. Newton plays a "sassy journalist" who helps the gang on their mystery-solving mission.
Reynold's role as a the beloved Pokémon type will reportedly be shot using motion-capture — so fans can likely expect more than a bit of yellow facepaint and a pinned-on tail to complete his transformation.
A release date for Detective Pikachu has yet to be announced.
